Perth Local, a Father of Two, Succumbs to Fatal Shark Encounter
Steven Mattaboni, a well-known spearfisher and devoted parent of two, has been identified as the individual who tragically lost his life in a shark attack near Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
The 38-year-old sustained fatal injuries after being bitten by a 4-meter (13-foot) great white shark around 9:54 AM local time on Saturday. The incident occurred near Horseshoe Reef, north of Marjorie Bay, situated on the western side of the popular tourist destination.
Mr. Mattaboni was engaged in spearfishing with companions and was approximately 20 meters from his vessel when the attack took place, resulting in bites to his legs.
Local law enforcement reported that he sustained severe injuries to both of his lower limbs during the “dreadful occurrence.”
Medical professionals made extensive efforts for over thirty minutes to preserve his life, but sadly, resuscitation was unsuccessful.
Expressions of sympathy are being widely shared by the deceased’s friends and relatives. His spouse remembered him as a “remarkably devoted, one-of-a-kind gentleman.”
“Steven was a loving father to our two wonderful daughters, with one approaching her third birthday next month and our infant daughter being just four months old,” stated Shirene, Mr. Mattaboni’s wife, in a released message.
“An enthusiastic angler and spearfisher, he possessed a profound connection to the ocean, always in harmony with its rhythms,” she added.
Originally from the northern suburbs of Perth, he also held the position of secretary for the spearfishing group Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia.
“The world has lost a truly singular gentleman, and our daughters have been deprived of an extraordinary father far too soon,” his wife conveyed.
Reece Whitby, the WA police minister, extended his condolences to the man’s family and commended the individuals who attempted to provide assistance.
“My deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the man’s family, his friends, and his loved ones,” Mr. Whitby remarked.
“I wish to recognize the diver’s friends for their crucial efforts in doing everything within their power to bring him back to shore,” he stated, as reported by ABC News.
The Kingsley Football Club, where Mr. Mattaboni had been a successful player, issued a statement acknowledging the 38-year-old as a “highly cherished companion to many within the club’s community.”
“Mattas was among the most authentic individuals one could encounter,” the club communicated via a Facebook post.
“Our thoughts and affection are with his family and friends during this exceedingly challenging period, particularly his wife Shirene and their two young daughters,” the statement concluded.
Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook, characterized the fatal incident as “profoundly upsetting” and “a devastating period for all involved.”
“This is a tragedy that will resonate with all Western Australians,” Mr. Cook asserted.
Notwithstanding the attack, the beaches at Rottnest Island remain accessible to the public.
The Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has advised individuals on the island to exercise heightened caution while in the water.
