The second day of the “Giro d’Italia-2026” turned out to be dramatic and unpredictable

The second stage of the “Giro d’Italia-2026” was both historic and dramatic, combining the first-ever triumph for Uruguayan rider Guillermo Thomas Silva with a mass exit of favorites due to severe crashes. This is reported by “Glavcom.”

Silva’s Triumph

Guillermo Thomas Silva of the XDS Astana team won the long 220-kilometer route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo, becoming the first representative of Uruguay not only to win a stage of “Corsa Rosa” but also to wear the pink jersey of the general classification leader.

Details of the Accident

However, the sporting achievement was overshadowed by a large-scale accident on a rain-slicked road 22 kilometers from the finish, which led to significant losses in the peloton, especially for the UAE Team Emirates-XRG team. The list of riders forced to abandon the race grew rapidly: Matteo Moschetti withdrew before the start of the second stage due to the consequences of a fall on the first day, and during Saturday’s race, Jay Vine, Marc Soler, Odn Holter, and Santiago Buitrago also dropped out. For some stars, the consequences manifested after the finish. For example, the Italian Andrea Vendrame, who was diagnosed with fractures in his lower back, and one of the race favorites, Adam Yates, due to delayed concussion symptoms, did not start the third stage. The UAE medical staff confirmed that in addition to Yates, Vine suffered a broken elbow, and Soler sustained a fractured pelvis.

Despite the race being neutralized for several minutes due to the crash, the final part of the stage was tense thanks to Jonas Vingegaard’s attack on the climb to the Ljaskoets monastery. Although the Dane attempted to break away with Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert Van Eetvelt, the chasing group caught up with the leaders 500 meters before the finish. It was at this moment that Christian Scaroni perfectly accelerated his teammate Thomas Silva, allowing him to overtake Florian Stork and Giulio Ciccone.

It is recalled that a 21-year-old Belgian cyclist died from injuries sustained in a road accident.
